The Local History of Port Broughton, South Australia

Port Broughton is a small yet charming town located in South Australia. With a population of just over a thousand people, the town has a rich history that dates back to the early 1800s.

Early Settlements

The original inhabitants of the area were the local indigenous people, the Ngadjuri tribe. They lived off the land and thrived for many years until the arrival of the British settlers in the 1800s.

The first British settlers arrived in Port Broughton in 1871. They were primarily farmers and fishermen who were in search of new lands to cultivate and fish in. Among the early settlers were the Hughes and the Kitchener families, who played a significant role in the town’s development.

The Development of Port Broughton

During the early years of Port Broughton, the town’s primary industry was fishing. Many fishermen would bring their catch to the shore, and the locals would purchase it from them. The town also had a small jetty where these fishermen could dock their boats.

As the town continued to grow, agriculture also became a significant industry. Farmers began cultivating crops such as wheat, barley, and oats. Soon after, the town established its first post office in 1877, followed by the opening of a school in 1881.

The Railway and the Jetty

During the late 1800s, the South Australian government constructed a railway that connected Port Broughton with Adelaide. This railway was essential in the development of the town, as it allowed for goods and passengers to be transported quickly and easily. The railway also led to the construction of a new jetty in 1902, which was crucial for transporting goods to other parts of the world.

The 20th Century

The 20th century was a significant period of growth for Port Broughton. In 1910, the town was officially declared a port, and by the 1920s, the population had grown to over 800 residents. During this period, the town also established a branch of the Country Women’s Association (CWA), which was significant in the development of the town as it played a vital role in providing support and education to the women of the town.

The town also experienced some difficult times in the early 1900s. During World War I, many young men from the town were conscripted into the Australian army, and sadly, some did not return home. In addition, during the Great Depression of the 1930s, the town experienced significant economic hardship.

Recent Developments

Despite the challenges that Port Broughton faced during the 20th century, the town continued to grow and thrive. In recent years, the town has developed a reputation as a popular tourist destination, thanks to its beautiful beaches and picturesque location. The town is also home to numerous festivals and events, including the annual Broughton Bay Moonta Bay Festival and the Christmas Parade.
