📖 Phil Cummings
Phil Cummings was born at Port Broughton and moved with his family to Peterborough after an early farm childhood. The youngest of eight children, he remembered railway engines rattling the house windows and older brothers working on the trains. Jobs in a garage and abattoirs preceded teacher training, where children’s literature encouraged him to try writing. Repeated rejection taught him that a picture book was harder to make than it looked. Goodness Gracious! appeared in 1989, beginning a substantial career for young readers. His own account keeps family, railway-town life and persistence behind the published books.
🎙️ Sally Sara
Sally Sara grew up at Port Broughton before becoming an ABC journalist and foreign correspondent. Reporting took her to countries including Afghanistan, Iraq and Sierra Leone, with work in radio, television and print. Her book Gogo Mama profiled twelve African women, reflecting an interest in individual lives within larger international stories. Walkley Awards recognised both television and radio reporting, while her 2011 appointment to the Order of Australia acknowledged journalism and community service. The coastal childhood sits behind a career spent helping Australian audiences understand places whose daily realities can be far removed from their own.
